“I can see why so many people love this book…” I have heard people refer to Gordon MacDonald’s “Ordering Your Private World” for years, and I finally got around to reading it. I can see why it has been so influential, as it is extremely well-written. Though this book might be most helpful to pastors, since MacDonald writes from that perspective and experience, I think that he has much wisdom to share with any Christians or even non-Christians who want to establish some order in their lives.
One of the things that I appreciated most about the book was that it was not specifically prescriptive of the ten steps that everyone needs to take to fix their lives, as most self-help books tend to do. Instead, MacDonald offered an insightful diagnosis of what many of us experience (exhaustion, stress, overcommitment, hyperbusyness) and suggests some simple and broad choices that can help to alleviate the problem.
Ultimately, I appreciate MacDonald’s primary perspective, that we have the power to make choices that will…
Product Description Ordering Your Private World is phenomenal selling over 1 million copies upon its original release in 1984. With revisions and new material, it is ever more timely to readers. Never admitting to have it all together, but rather using his own personal struggle as a way for readers to relate to his principles, Gordon MacDonald’s classic book invites readers to bring order to their personal life by inviting God’s control over every segment of their lives. His premise is that if the private world of a person is in order, it will be because they are convinced that the inner world of the spiritual must govern the outer world of activity. |

A little disorder never hurt anybody? ![]() this was fantastic–on hindsight. I read this 15-20yrs ago, and knew it was full of insightful wisdom and helpful advice. And like most everyone, I had to learn for myself what works and what doesn’t. Know thyself. That only comes after pushing, stretching, attempting and failing. Because I’ve been willing to risk it, I’m finally gaining a bit of wisdom. Is it worth recommending this book to someone who’s still driven to succeed? There’s so much that I never understood, because I was trying so hard to be what I should have been. That was the lie. When I finally learned to look inside, and to honor the call, that’s when the change began to happen. This book is like a map. You might recognize a road or a village, and you know that’s a place you’d like to visit. How are you going to get there? Are you going to follow the directions or take the scenic route? Once arrived, that map takes on an entirely different understanding. I may have gotten there by an easier path, but I believe I’m richer for the journey…. AWESOME!!!!!!! A classic top 10 for me Order Your World after reading Ordering Your Private World |
